August 28, 2010

Boscia Luminizing Black Mask ($34, 2.8 fl oz) is a mineral-rich “peel-off” mask that delivers powerful detoxifying, purifying, and brightening effects. The unique peel-off action offers gratifying physical exfoliation—as you peel, you actively remove dirt, toxins, and dead skin layers. Exceptional deep-cleansing and exfoliation draw out impurities, bacteria, and excess oil, refining and minimizing pores. Recover smooth, even skintone as pre-existing melanin levels diminish, fading the appearance of dark spots. Inflammation, roughness, lines, and wrinkles fade, revealing younger-looking skin.

Recommendation: A brightening mask that will remove dead skin and deliver antioxidants but in my experience did not remove any oil from my pores. This is a good product but if you’re looking for something like a Biore nose strip for your face this is not it.

Choosing a Tinted Moisturizer for Summer

July 5, 2010

Choosing a Tinted Moisturizer for Summer

If you spent the holiday weekend grilling, swimming, and enjoying the great outdoors, you might have gotten some color  despite using sunscreen diligently. Now that it’s time to go back to work, your regular foundation or powder may be a few shades too pale and pasty. To get sheer coverage that won’t make you feel as though you’re wearing a mask, try switching to a tinted moisturizer. Many are formulated with SPF, but like sunscreen, the protection wears off during the day, so remember to reapply if you put the moisturizer on in the morning and go outside hours later. Here are some good tinted moisturizers for different skin types:

Oily or acne-prone skin, look for an oil-free formula, like Clinique Moisture Sheer Tint, which has a cream-gel formula that hydrates without making you greasy. It comes in three shades and is $27 at Clinique.com. Smashbox Sheer Focus Tinted Moisturizer is also free of oil, and it’s paraben- and fragrance-free as well ($30 at smashbox.com). Both of these are very sheer, so you may first need to dab concealer on hard-to-hide areas.

Normal skin to dry skin, try Physicians Formula Organic Wear Tinted Moisturizer, which is made with natural and organic ingredients like jojoba, sunflower seed, and avocado oils. It comes in three shades and is about $11 at drugstores and drugstore.com.

To get a lovely glow, try Laura Mercier Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer. This is a creamy, lightweight formula with a bit of shimmer to impart a glow (use a light hand so you don’t look too shiny). It comes in four shades that you can build up wherever you need more coverage ($42 at department stores and lauramercier.com).

Mario Badescu’s Collagen Moisturizer SPF 15

May 29, 2010

Mario Badescu’s Collagen Moisturizer SPF 15 ($22, 2oz) is an ultra-lightweight, daily moisture and moderate sun protection all-in-one. Collagen-rich formula protects skin from moisture loss and keeps skin smooth, plump and healthy without the use of heavy oils. To use, apply the moisturizer on clean skin before sun exposure all over the face avoiding the eye area.  It is best to reapply frequently to maintain protection and after perspiring or swimming. This may be used under make-up or alone and ideal for combination and sensitive skin.

What is Collagen? Collagen is a protein found in skin and breaks down as we age. Meaning the skin loses its elasticity and begins to sag and wrinkle. One of the contributing factors to collagen loss is also due to exposure to UV rays. I am not sure exactly how Collagen can be reintroduced and incorporated into the skin but being that I am still in my 20s I still have more Collagen in my skin than older women. I cannot say if this product will help with the firmness of the skin of older women but this is a great lightweight moisturizer. Continue Reading »
